Cat from Backyard Decides He’ll Be ‘Teddy Bear Couch Potato’ Once He Moves Inside

A cat found in a backyard decided he would be a “teddy bear couch potato” once he moved inside.

A kind-hearted resident found a big-framed tomcat scrounging for food in her backyard.

He was rough around the edges, with telltale signs of having fended for himself for a long time. To her surprise, the cat was friendly and eager for attention. She brought him inside and searched for his owner, but after a month of looking, no one came forward to claim him.

Hoping to find the cat a loving home, she contacted her local rescue, Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions, for help.

The cat, Kodiak, was treated for an infected wound on his leg and given the necessary care. Ellen Richter, a foster volunteer, opened her home to him so he could have a comfortable place to acclimate.

“I’ve never met an adult cat that wanted to be snuggled in my arms and hugged after just meeting. This big boy is a love bug,” Ellen shared.

“He’s 7-8 years old with a discoloration mark in his eye that doesn’t affect his vision. He is a huge tomcat, just a big cuddly bear. He’s very mellow and quiet, meowing every once in a while.”

Shortly after arriving in foster care, Kodiak climbed into Ellen’s lap and nuzzled his face against hers, seeking extra affection.

He curled up on her lap, happily kneading with his paws until he drifted off to sleep.

“This teddy bear mandates kisses and cuddles. He constantly climbs in my lap and wants to be close. If I’m standing, I’ll pick him up and hold him in my arms, which he loves. He eats a whole can each meal and burns so much energy sleeping all day.”

Kodiak’s coat is sprinkled with gray, like salt and pepper. He bears a few battle scars on his face and ears, signs of a hard life on the streets. Despite all he’s been through, he never shies away from affection.

On the first night with Ellen, he kept making biscuits and filled the room with his loud purrs.

He turned into a purring machine, leaning into his foster mom with his big cheeks to soak up all the love.

“All his snuggling and cuddling is a behavior that was learned. We’ll never know how he ended up living on the streets. Thankfully, he wandered into a yard where someone cared enough to help him.”

When Ellen entered the room, Kodiak would blink slowly and roll onto his side, asking for back and belly rubs. He loved his new life, lounging all day and showing off his “couch potato skills.”

At night, after a cuddle session, Kodiak would put himself to bed by nestling into his fluffy blanket, kneading and purring contentedly.

He discovered toys and showed interest in play, but most of the time, he was the perfect couch potato, relaxing in his cozy nest, always ready for some head scratches.

To give him more exposure to potential adopters, volunteers set up a spacious suite for him at the adoption center, where he could roam around, meet new people, and socialize with other friendly cats.

Kodiak quickly settled into his new room and got along beautifully with his feline roommates.

He is eager to offer cuddles to anyone who wants to spend time with him. “This teddy bear is so sweet and loving. He’ll be spoiled by many staff, volunteers, and visitors at the adoption center until he finds the right home.”
